Customer Success Story:
Walsall Council

Background
Local authorities are under increasing pressure to maximise revenue, protect public funds and ensure council tax discounts are applied accurately. However, identifying potential incorrect discounts and changes in household circumstances can be challenging when relevant information is spread across multiple systems and requires significant manual effort to review.
To tackle this challenge, Walsall Council wanted to take a more data-driven approach, using the information it already holds to identify potential incorrect Single Person Discount claims and changes in household circumstances.
The Challenge
Information relevant to council tax reviews was held across multiple systems, making it difficult and time-consuming to build a complete picture of each household. The council needed a solution that could bring this data together, highlight potential review cases and help officers prioritise their investigations.
The Solution
Sentinel implemented its Single Person Discount Review solution using the Sentinel Data Platform.By combining council tax, electoral register and other council datasets into a single, trusted view, the platform uses advanced data matching and analytics to identify households that may require further review. Interactive dashboards allow officers to prioritise cases, view supporting evidence and monitor potential revenue recovery opportunities.
The Benefits
By bringing together data from multiple council systems, Sentinel's solution helps officers identify and prioritise cases that may require further review, including:
-
Potential incorrect Single Person Discount claims by highlighting households where additional occupants may be living.
-
Children approaching their 18th birthday, enabling councils to proactively contact residents before eligibility for a Single Person Discount may change.
-
Residents linked to multiple properties, helping identify cases that may require further investigation.
-
Changes in household circumstances, using trusted data from across the organisation to build a more complete picture of occupancy.
-
Prioritised investigation cases, allowing officers to focus on the highest-value opportunities and make better use of their time.
The platform provides evidence-based insights to support investigations, with all decisions remaining under the council's control.
